Bringing Home Puppy

Paying it Forward

Many of you may recall the incident last summer where our dog walker lost our dear Timmy, and thanks to a wonderful human being, he was safely returned home.  (If you missed it, you can read about this wholly traumatic adventure here).  This weekend we had the opportunity to truly  “pay it forward”.  Friday evening we left our building to make a  stop at the park when we saw 2 men running towards us, chasing a frantically running dog up Bathurst St.  Without thinking, we joined the chase.  Within seconds, half a dozen people, including Rogers cable guys, door men, and pedestrians of all sorts joined the chase for this tiny toy dog.   The poor pup ran frantically around the block, heading towards King St until he was chased into a nightclub undergoing renovation.  I waited at the top of the stairs for the dog to try and make his escape.   Luckily, another woman was able to chase him out and I was able to grab him and hold  tight until he calmed down (not easy when the dog is biting, scratching and wiggling to escape!)

Here is a photo of the poor guy:

Fortunately, he was wearing tags which stated he was a patient of Queen St. Animal Hospital.  Unfortunately, it was closed for the long weekend.

Fortunately, he was wearing tags from Toronto Animal Services.  Unfortunately, they were also closed for the night.  Of course, I wouldn’t mind having a little pup to hang out with for the night…but I’m sure my little Timmy wasn’t too thrilled at the prospect!

Figuring the dog was a neighbourhood resident, we decided to grab our spare leash and hang around outside – hoping the frantic owner would find us.  We canvassed the ‘hood, talked to fellow owners and residents – none of whom recognized the sand-coloured dog.  I posted a Tweet, complete with picture, and hoped for the best.

Just as it was beginning to get dark and we were facing the prospect of having a furry houseguest, a man ran across the park shouting at us – with joy, thankfully. (In my neighbourhood, you can never be sure!)  The man had been parked nearby when his little guy decided to head out for a solo adventure.   The dog was thrilled to see him.  All in all, it was a great reunion, and I felt so thankful to have had the opportunity to repay the kindness that was shown to us less than a year ago.  Another confirmation that karma really does exist!

These last two weeks have been tough ones in the O’Hurren household.  Last week I was stricken with a nasty stomach flu that may have been Novovirus.  And this week?  Mike is at home from work with a terrible head cold (and if you know him, you know he doesn’t miss work unless he is REALLY sick).

All the while, our faithful pup  has been by our side, throughout the long days and nights of various illnesses.  His little body keeps us warm (or throws us over the edge during fits of fever), and his cold nose checks us periodically for signs of life.  And as anyone who gets sick knows, its nice to have a little buddy around.

It took a long time, but now our little pup Timmy is confidently able to manoeuvre the main stairs in the building, the stairs at the park, and the stairs pretty much everywhere.  Except the ones in our house.  This likely goes back to the little fall he had when he was just learning.  Since then, Mike has been working tirelessly trying to build up his confidence by helping him up the last few stairs every night.  We still have a lot of progress to make though.  Well…at least we thought so!

Last night we were getting ready for bed upstairs, leaving Timmy downstairs to play.  I had just gone into the bedroom to moisturize, when I heard the unmistakable sound of dog claws on hardwood.  I whipped around and saw little Timmy running down the hall towards me!  He did it!  All by himself!!!

We were so proud.  And, of course, now he is just showing off by following us around the house, upstairs and down.  He even managed to make it upstairs with his bone!  It was miraculous really.

And now we realize our shoe-hiding place on the stairs is no longer safe!  Now we will actually have to clean up after ourselves and put them away!  *groan*

Apologies for the lack of blog updates.  With my bro getting married in a couple weeks, and busyness all around, its been hard finding the time for writing!

Timmy has been going through a lot of changes lately…mostly in the form of teething.  I was never really aware that as puppies grow, their baby teeth gradually fall out, and are replaced by adult teeth.  They also develop molars.  This means that dogs, like babies, can get un comfortable, and sore.
Oh…and they BLEED all over other dogs in the park!

Yesterday at the park I noticed the Boston Terrier he was playing with had blood all over his neck…upon closer examination, we realized that Tim had lost ANOTHER tooth…meaning he has none of his canine teeth left!  Poor little guy.  And his breath stinks.  Like blood.  Its yukky.

Another milestone in Timmy’s young life has begun to happen: he is losing his baby teeth!

We knew this would happen, and we heard that most of the time you don’t even notice, but Timmy had been leaving blood on some of his toys!  Upon inspection we noticed that he was missing not one tooth, not even two teeth, but THREE!!!  Poor little guy!

I have been giving him some ice chips to chew, which he seems to enjoy.  He doesn’t really seem bothered by any of the changes, but we’re keeping an eye on him anyway!
