While Grandma Hurren was in Toronto visiting us this weekend, she kindly brought a little gift for her new grandpuppy.

It was a set of doggie “door” bells.  You see, part of the challenge of training a dog to use the bathroom outside is having them let you know when they have to go.  These bells are hung on, or near the door, and all the dog has to do to be let outside is ring them by nudging them with their paw or nose.  I had done a trial run with Tim only about 3 times this weekend.

So tonight, Mike and I were sitting having dinner when Tim gets off his bed, walks over to the bells, rings them, and then proceeds outside the already open door to take a poop on his mat!

It was MIRACULOUS!  I nearly cried, honestly.  It was so amazing, we could not believe our eyes.

I really think we may have the smartest dog in the whole world!!!

And a big thank you to Grandma Hurren for such a great tool!

Yet another corner! But a real one this time!

Good news everyone!  Today was the first time that Tim Tam actually made motions to be let outside.  This morning he went to the back patio door and jumped up and down.  I let him out and he immediately went pee on his pad!  How great is that?!?!

I think he’s starting to get it!

So we have been working on Tim Tam’s housetraining.  It is going quite well.  He has accidents in the house very infrequently…like maybe only 2 times per week.  So I think that is a great success for only 10 weeks old.  Housebreaking in an apartment does present some challenges when compared to housebreaking in a house.  In a house you can just open the door and send them outside.  If they start to go inside, its easy to just put them outside to complete their business.  In an apartment, if you see them going, you have to pick them up, get shoes on, unlock doors, head down the hall, down the stairs, and out another 2 doors.  At that point, the lesson is lost on the dog.

What we have started to do is put a training pad out on our balcony, for emergencies, and for early morning and late at night pees.  I did not want to do this at first, because I want him to learn to go ONLY outside, but this seems to be a good stop gap measure until he is old enough to figure things out. Anyway, it seems to be working quite well, and yesterday he made his first bathroom break unprompted by Mike or myself.  So thats pretty cool!

He is also getting more comfortable going outside in places other than his “spot”.  So that is great!  I feel like we’re getting there!

…and Im sure this posting can be categorized under “TMI”!  If any of you have tips or tricks, we’d love to hear about them!

If we turn enough corners, we end up where we started

So today I bought crack.  Well, crack for dogs anyway.  Its these liver treats that are supposed to be the best things ever.  If you’re a dog.  So I bought them, and we are going to use them ONLY for successful poops outside.  And we had 2 of those today!  Yippee!

And then no more than 10 minutes after dinner, Tim calmly walks into his crate, bends over, and takes a MASSIVE dump.

So, clean out the crate with soap and water.  Again.

And its funny, this time I’m not even upset.  I’m trying to be very Zen about the whole thing.  Like Cesar Millan says, “its all about energy”.  So Im focusing my energy on positivity, and pooping outside.
