Bringing Home Puppy

Westminster 2012!

Watching Westminster is just something we DO in our house.  Something about seeing all the neat, cute, gorgeous dog breeds and hearing about their origins and quirks is always totally entertaining.  Even our DOG is riveted!

Toy Manchester Terriers never seem to do incredibly well in these competitions, and has only ever one one Toy Group (let alone Best in Show!) and that was in 1969!  Discrimination, I say!   Best in Show 2012 was set to be quite stiff competition.   Wire Haired Dachshund, Pekingese, Dalmation, German Shepherd, Irish Setter, Doberman Pinscher and the Kerry Blue.  Of course, I was rooting for the Doberman.

Ugh. The Pekingese. ¬†115 Best in Shows awards to that breed. ¬†And sooooo lame! ¬†Seems like an easy choice for the judges. ¬†Won’t rock the boat. ¬†LAME! ¬†Am I wrong?! ¬†Are they not the most useless dogs out there? ¬†Maybe I’m wrong – I’d love to hear from a Peek owner who can tell me otherwise. ¬†But why do all the over-groomed dogs win! ¬†Why?! ¬†WHY!?!?!

Shop Till You Drop!

Toronto has just declared an Extreme Cold Weather Alert Рwhich basically means its going to be damn cold, not including windchill.  This does not bode well for our canine friends, particularly the skinny ones with no hair on their undersides.  Canines just like Timmy.

Last winter, while I really enjoyed his Chilly Dogs coat (you can read about that here), I couldn’t get over the notion that his little (big) ears must get pretty cold! ¬†We had fashioned a little hood for him out of a tube sock, by cutting the end off, and sliding his head through. ¬†This kept the ears pressed to the head, and hopefully warm. ¬†But he hated it, and it looked rediculous.

Well, lo and behold, while perusing Etsytoday, I found the solution! ¬†Now, if you aren’t familiar with the site, Etsy is basically a crafter’s paradise. ¬†It’s a site where people can post their handmade items for sale to the general public. ¬†They’ve got everything from¬†jewelery¬†to furniture, to clothing, soaps, knitting patterns and more. ¬†Much, much more. ¬†Etsy must have been made by the devil, because you could literally spend all day on it, not to mention thousands of dollars.

In any case, I came across this coat:

It’s made by VoyagersK9Apparel, out of Deerfield, Michigan. ¬†Notice the handy ear covers?! ¬†When you place your order they also ask for extensive measurements, so that this coat will fit like the proverbial glove! ¬†They even provide a YouTube link so you can make sure you take your measurements perfectly. ¬†Its not just for little dogs either. ¬†You can get your Boxer, Doberman, Boston Terrier and Greyhound fitted, and all other breeds as custom orders. ¬†Fingers crossed this is the solution to our winter problems!

I met a great couple in the park a couple weeks ago, and they were kind enough to send me a few snaps they took of Tim playing with their Doberman, Roxy.  In these pictures you can really see the size difference between the Doberman Pincher and a Toy Manchester.

Thanks so much Mike and Valerie!

Is that a Min Pin?

A question we get asked a lot (as in…everyday), is if Tim Tam is a Miniature Pinscher.¬† The answer is, no!¬† He is a Manchester Terrier, which is actually a predecessor of the Doberman. ¬†So far on our walks only 1 person has correctly identified little Timmy.

A great website on the difference between the Toy and Standard Manchester, as well as the Min Pin and Doberman is http://www.ebetmanchesters.com.

Try this pic on for size!

4 Breeds

Toy Manchester, Standard Manchester, German Pinscher, Doberman Pinscher.

Our boy is a Toy…and by this pic it seems like he’s going to be quite small!

This is a Min Pin:

Little Pawz -- Miniature Pinscher

This is a Manchester:

So I guess the main difference in appearance is the naturally erect ears in the Toy Manchester (Standard Manchesters can have either the erect or the floppy), the natural tail (not cropped), and the long face. ¬†So, this Manchester terrier walks into a bar, and the bartender says, “Hey, why the long face”?

Okay, clearly, I should go to bed.
