Bringing Home Puppy

Westminster 2012!

Watching Westminster is just something we DO in our house.  Something about seeing all the neat, cute, gorgeous dog breeds and hearing about their origins and quirks is always totally entertaining.  Even our DOG is riveted!

Toy Manchester Terriers never seem to do incredibly well in these competitions, and has only ever one one Toy Group (let alone Best in Show!) and that was in 1969!  Discrimination, I say!   Best in Show 2012 was set to be quite stiff competition.   Wire Haired Dachshund, Pekingese, Dalmation, German Shepherd, Irish Setter, Doberman Pinscher and the Kerry Blue.  Of course, I was rooting for the Doberman.

Ugh. The Pekingese.  115 Best in Shows awards to that breed.  And sooooo lame!  Seems like an easy choice for the judges.  Won’t rock the boat.  LAME!  Am I wrong?!  Are they not the most useless dogs out there?  Maybe I’m wrong – I’d love to hear from a Peek owner who can tell me otherwise.  But why do all the over-groomed dogs win!  Why?!  WHY!?!?!

Westminster 2011!

The 2011 Westminster Kennell Club Dog Show wrapped up this week, and Best in Show was the Scottish Deerhound, Hickory.

I love the size and scruffy look of this guy – might have to add the Scottish Deerhound to the shortlist for our next dog!   Just look at this face:

The New York Times has published a great slideshow of all the Best in Breed winners,  as photographed by Fred Conrad.  I love looking at all the strange and wonderful variation in the world of dogs!  You can see all the winners here, including the Toy Manchester Terrier winner, Rocky.  Perhaps I’m biased (well, of course I am!), but I think Timmy is much cuter than dear Rocky!

So ugly, he’s cute!

This article from the Daily Mail UK is enough to give any pooch hope for finding a home  – no matter what!

Manchester Terrier Extinction! Oh dear!

Just stumbled upon this article by the Daily Mail out of the UK, which discusses how the rise of “celebrity” dogs, dogs popularized by television shows and films, and designer mix-breeds are pushing other breeds of less popular dogs to the brink of extinction, including my dear Manchester Terriers!  How sad!  They also include on this list are the Irish Water Spaniel, the Otterhound, Cardigan Welsh Corgi, Skye Terrier and the Smooth Collie, to name a few.

How could anyone NOT want one of these Skye Terriers?!  So adorable!

Agility Rules!

For the last 12 weeks we have been taking dog agility classes through Who’s Walking Who.  What the heck is dog agility you ask?!  It is basically the ultimate in canine sports…and quite a workout for me, I might add!   While each dog must come into agility classes with basic sit-stay knowledge, it is truly amazing watching the development of your dog in a 12 week period.  Timmy’s sit-stays have improved, as have his downs, heeling and overall confidence.   As many of you know, Timmy can be a little bit of a scaredy-dog, and has earned the nickname Skitters – for always skittering away when he’s nervous.   12 weeks ago it was difficult to picture him running through tunnels, through a blind shoot, and walking over a teeter totter, but today he is doing all of those things and more with a sense of excitement, confidence and eagerness I never imagined possible.

Last night we graduated from Level 2 Agility, and I couldn’t be happier.  Here is a few pictures from the night:

…not really!  The Metric show at Union Station in Toronto yesterday was pretty great actually, lots of good tunes, and a big crowd.  You wouldn’t know it to see Cymbal though..the poor guy slept through 1/2 of it!  Not even the noise or the thousands of people could keep this guy awake!
