Bringing Home Puppy

A Cat in the Dog Park?!

So, I understand that people love their cats.  I am one of them myself, having loved and lost a dear little friend.  I also realize that it’s good for cats to get outside and enjoy the fresh air.  What I do not understand, however, is just why someone would bring their cat to the dog park, only to yell at every dog that showed interest?!  Well, Tim did a little more than show interest actually.  He barked, and barked, and barked.  And the woman was none to impressed.  But that goes back to my point…who brings a cat to the dog park!?

What’s in a Name?

Would a pup by any other name be as naughty?!   I have been a regular attendee of the dog park for about 6 months now.  In that time I have come across many dogs, with incredibly varied names.  I’m sure we all have our preferences, but I really enjoy dogs that have human names, like Dave, Tyler and Norman.  I also love food related names, (obviously)!  Like Tim Tam, Tuna, Chili, and Poutine.  Yep!  Those are all real dog names from my local park!

I find many names to be completely annoying however (and god help me if I offend any of my dog-loving friends here)

First and foremost: MARLEY.    I am sorry, but if you have named your dog Marley post 2008 when the Jennifer Aniston movie came out, I really have no respect for you.  I can excuse the name choice after the 2005 book -maybe- but after a blockbuster film, it’s just crazy.  It’s quite possibly the most unoriginal name ever.  I know people love their dogs, and it was a lovely book and movie, but it never fails that anytime you’re at a dog park there is at LEAST 1 dog there with this name, and I have even been at the park when there were 3 Marleys at once.

Oliver: I actually love the name Oliver, and if my dear readers recall, it was my name of choice for little Timmy!  I even had a poll!  But am I ever glad I changed it.  We have at least 3 Olivers at my local park.  That just gets difficult for practical reasons!

Maggie:  Its a good dog name really, its just way, way too common.

According to the Veterinary Pet Insurance Company, here are the top 10 dog names (male and female) for last year:

1 MAX   MOLLY

2 BUDDY  BELLA

3 JAKE  LUCY

4 BAILEY   MAGGIE

5 ROCKY   DAISY

6 CHARLIE   SADIE

7 JACK   CHLOE

8 TOBY      SOPHIE

9 CODY      BAILEY

10 BUSTER   ZOE

11 DUKE      LOLA

12 COOPER   ABBY

13 HARLEY   GINGER

14 RILEY   ROXY

15 BEAR   GRACIE

16 MURPHY     COCO

17 LUCKY     SASHA

18 TUCKER    ANGEL

19 SAM   LILY

20 OLIVER    PRINCESS

I don’t know about you, but in my experience, this list is quite accurate!  In any case, while Tim Tam may be an unconventional name that no one seems to hear or pronounce clearly,  I am still happy with our name choice, and little Timmy seems to enjoy it as well!

Finally…a Coat!

Well it took me long enough, but I finally found Tim a winter coat.  See, the trouble is that he is so long and skinny, nothing would fit!  Regular dog stuff didnt cover the last 1/2 of his back, and Dachshund clothing was too tight in the chest!  We loved the coats by Elanor, they are made from recycled fabric and were very cute, but we just couldn’t find the right fit.  Finally, someone facing the same dilemma at the dog park put me onto a brand called Chilly Dogs.  This is a Canadian company who also feature clothing made for long and lean dogs like Whippets, Salukis and Italian Greyhounds.  I was able to head down to my local Timmy Doggie Outfitters and get him one that day.  What is great is that the whole coat is fleece lined, waterproof, reflective, and completely adjustable.  It keeps his chest, neck, head, back and bum nice and cosy.  The price?  Well.  Embarrassing, to say the least.  But poor Timmy just couldn’t deal anymore with this chilly weather!

Timmy the warm doggie!

And this picture is proof that little Tim just loves his new coat!

Auntie Becky and Uncle Bryan were nice enough to look after little Timmy while mum and dad enjoyed an overly indulgent holiday in NYC.

While Timmy was a little restless the first couple of nights, he really loves being in Waterloo with the humans, and Sousa.

Here are a couple pics Bry snapped at  Bechetel dog park in Waterloo on Sunday.

Let the bum smelling begin!

Who Eats Balls from China?

…Apparently, my dog.

Against my better judgement, I let Timmy take his new ball into his crate with him when we went to bed last night.  I figured it would help him be quiet in his bed, and keep him a bit entertained.  He had never ingested anything or gotten sick from chewing stuff before.  Until last night.

I woke up around 1:30 to the sounds of retching.  Upon inspection I saw he had barfed in his crate.  I put the stuff in the wash and everything was fine.  But he puked again, and again.  In all, 13 times the poor guy got sick.  The culprit?  He had eaten his new ball into pieces, in the process swallowing some as well.  Luckily it seems that most of the pieces were recovered.

Finally, around 3 am, he was feeling better…enough to beg to be let onto the bed, tail wagging.  We let him sleep with us, and miraculously, he slept the whole night through…well, what was left of it anyway.

Lesson learned?  No chew toys when left unsupervised!!!

I met a great couple in the park a couple weeks ago, and they were kind enough to send me a few snaps they took of Tim playing with their Doberman, Roxy.  In these pictures you can really see the size difference between the Doberman Pincher and a Toy Manchester.

Thanks so much Mike and Valerie!

Well, we attempted to brush Tim’s teeth for the first time.  Emphasis should be placed on “attempted”….

I'm outta here!

You can try to run….

Don't even think about putting that in my mouth!

You can try to avoid….

Ohhh :(

But we will get you in the end!
